La Madera Farms Garlic Harvest

shapeimage_1Olivia Vela Page, ace garlic cleaner, finishes up work on 1,904 head of premium spicy gourmet hard neck easy-to-peel garlic from the La Madera Farms 2012 harvest. Yield exceeded 2011 by a significant margin but quality was the amazing improvement. Last year we had three 3″ heads; this year 7% of the harvest, 145 head, were 3″ or bigger. The bulk of the crop — 56% — was 2.5″ to 2.99″ this year. And 28% were 2″ to 2.49″. We didn’t even count the ones below two inches.

Timely rains this Spring, great compost from Ute Mountain Ranch in Jaroso, Colorado and a generous helping of Yum-Yum Mix were the foundation. Better weed control helped. Thanks to all the great help from Joe Trujillo, Claudia Page, Bob Snow, Susan Voss, Don Emery, and especially, Olivia, who put in more hours than anyone else. See you at the Rio Arriba County Fair!
